80/40

Dear Friends,

This year I am celebrating two birthdays, my own 80th and the 40th anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. There are many events and programs happening around the world for The Very Hungry Caterpillar's 40th and there is an exhibit currently on view at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art called 80/40: Celebrating the Birthdays of Eric Carle and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. For more information and for a little preview of the exhibition, you might like to visit the Museum's web site at http://www.carlemuseum.org/Exhibitions/Current_Exhibitions

  2. Dear Sir, I'm a mum and a primary teacher from Argentina. I'm really fond of your work. Last year, I was able to buy a board book copy of the CATERPILLAR for my 2 children through Amazon (by the way: it is awesome!). They cannot stop telling and retelling it to themselves in spanish. It's a blast! I should definetely record them! Appart from that one, we do own a small "collection" of other titles of yours... Hope to complete it some day! Happy birthday to you and to our beloved caterpillar!! Seriously, you define the meaning of good children's book. ChapĆ³!

  3. Dear Mr Carle,
I am six years old and go to school at Greencastle Antrim Elementary School in Greencastle, Pa. I do alot of things at school and go to library. I always pick your books because I like your art. I want to be an artist someday. Happy Birthday!

  4. Happy birthday, sir. Your work inspired me a long time ago and it is part of what is helping me to make my own dream come true. I'm starting art workshops in my home for adults--not to rediscover their inner child, but quite simply to be a kid and make a mess without some silly inner censor saying "THAT TREE IS PURPLE. Trees are NOT purple." Or "your butterfly looks like a toad." I visit the museum when I am afraid my life's run off its tracks, and I wind up looking out over the hills or simply reading six of your books in a row. THEN my life seems just fine. thank you for your joy, your silliness, your work, and your ability to inject us all with a sense of pure happiness. I can never be Eric Carle in my own art. What I CAN be is myself and bring whatever quirky happiness I can onto my own canvas. Stay with us, sir, a long time longer, if you can.

  10. Happy Birthday Mr. Carle. My 3 girls grew up with your books. They were favorites to read aloud and their favorites to read together. My eldest and I met you in the early 1980s when you visited our local children's book store. We have pictures of that visit and treasure the memory. Thank you for your lovely books.

  12. Dear Mr. Carle,
Happy belated birthday! I hope it was joyful! My six-year-old son LOVES your books. Every week his kindergarten class gets to check out one book from the school library, and almost every book he's gotten for months has been one of yours. He's also a big bug lover, so he really enjoys the stories involving insects, and he just loves the way you illustrate your books. He loves your books so much, he knows how to read your name (he doesn't know how to read mine!). Thank you for your wonderful work! We read to our son every night, and even I get excited when he brings home a new one of your books! They are always a joyful adventure!
    Blessings, Bonnie
